The December issue presented something of a dilemma. We, of course, did not want to ignore the holidays, but nor did we feel compelled to focus on them directly and entirely. This time of year means different things to different people and, as illustrated by David Strickland and Amelia Pond’s pieces, the holidays are not always happy. The goal of this issue was to, in some small way, represent the holiday spirit in its myriad forms and fashions.
For example, for our news feature Here & Now, I attend Banger Brewing’s “Pub Theology” event, which blends beer, God and conversation. Outreach Life columnist Merideth Spriggs gives guidance on how to donate and volunteer. Strickland, who was once homeless, recalls holidays spent on the streets and a unique gift that helped turn around his life. Jarret Keene profiles Cal Potter of Potter Law Offices, who uses his legal expertise to help those in need. Cynthia Cicero and our art and design team give the gift of knowledge in their informative and decorative spread on the history of fashion. For Off the Ranch, Kayla Miller visits a sweet dessert spot. In his final Fabulous Downtown column, Brian Paco Alvarez captions a classic, Vegas-style Christmas pic in a way only he can. (Thanks for your contributions, Paco!)
We hope we found the right balance. Happy holidays!
