The stories and images in this premier issue are a gallery of thoughts formed within the minds of our staff and contributors. Some of the staff I already knew and some are recently found. The common thread is that we are all passionate about making our livelihoods from such work—to create something beautiful: a chorus of voices in print.
Those of you reading Downtown Zen for the first time should know that Zen originally stood for Zappos Employee Newsletter. Originally, it was a 600-copy, internal, company publication created to acclimate employees to downtown, but it has grown into a 40,000-copy, valley-wide magazine depicting urban life here in our city, and Zen has become a state of mind more than an acronym. As our staff and contributors present each piece of themselves through this medium, our hope is to inspire, connect and inform.
From the streets to the skyscrapers, Downtown Zen will offer compelling writing and breathtaking photography. Subjects will include current events, literary fiction, life coaching, art, history, music, fashion, business and homelessness. We will be gritty and glossy.
We are the city. We are downtown. We are Zen.
